Not all of the band photos I take are performance photos. A lot of them are taken before the show, in order to capture the performers during more candid and relaxed moments. I also tend to shoot while the the band is setting up and the engineer is doing the sound check, before the room lights are dimmed and the actual performance begins. This makes it possible to get properly or at least adequately exposed photographs in venues where the light levels are extremely low during the actual sets. The sound check allows much more consideration and care to be taken during the actual picture taking, as the lighting is fixed and the performers are relatively still.
Some of the shots showcased here are from venues that are extremely difficult to shoot in during the normal course of a set. Others are from venues that are relatively easier going from a photographic standpoint. All are candid photographs of the people involved as they prepare to give all they've got for their fans and audience. Often these shots capture sides of a performer's personality that are not on display during a public performance, or views of a performer that aren't usually seen onstage.
